The digital divide

A friend of mine is having her freshman English class maintain a blog for the duration of the semester. I think is a great idea. For one it is a way of incorporating technology into the class work. Moreover, it an innovative way of have the students respond to what is done in class. While I think this is a good idea, it does cause me to ask questions about the digital divide.

I understand that every student as this school has access to computers with internet access, and I would imagine that they each have a computer of their own. However, I wonder at the implication of assuming that students have and know how to use a computer. Has a computer become a necessity for a citizen in the US and if so has internet access become just as necessary?

just a thought....

  • hey just found your blog. interesting. i do have to say that unfortunatly the education field is moving into almost complete computerization. business is giving it a hard hard second i have a class that meets half in class half online. I only go once a week even though it was scheduled for two. now doing work on the computer is much more convient, but i completely understand your point. and that fact in and of itself hinders the whole education process. but i think the economy (barring no immediate meltdown of the system) will have the strength in electronics that are cheap enough to afford and still be of adequate fuction. Internet service is on a different plane but that is where the institues of education should come in. but on a larger scale it just adds to our credit debt that americans are whoring the hell out of to keep up with societies 'advancement'. it's how i got mine on my own.

i love reading stuff like this. i'll comment if you write more!
