for me, replacing the word "dead" with the word "past" made it much more relevant for me. as the grasp of the past continues to strengthen around the limp limbs of the soul, it takes any breath--no matter who or what offers it--in a last ditch attempt to salvage that which it is left with. yet darkness--that which has corrupted what was once pure--innocent--good--now fights only for an opportunity to survive--regardless of how tarnished--how guilty--how evil . . . can the chains of the past ever truly be broken?
